A Hardy Developer's Journal explores the fascinating world of indie adventure games in all its wonderful facets. Among my contributions for the site are an ongoing article series called Making History, about incorporating history into game design, an interview with the makers of the highly-acclaimed adventure game The Dream Machine, and several reviews.
Since 1997, The International House of Mojo has been the centre of the universe (or at least the internet) when it comes to LucasArts and related video games. I have contributed to some of their LucasArts' Secret History articles, writing about the use of history in The Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge, as well as about the architectural influences on Grim Fandango. I am also a forum moderator there, and have a Mojo-hosted site about Autumn Moon Entertainment, called The Pumpkin Post.
I was a news updater and forum moderator for The World of Monkey Island from the early 2000s until it closed down at the end of 2007. When the site was relaunched as the Tales of Monkey Island blog in 2009, I once again joined the team, writing reviews, news updates, and original features, such as History with Haggis. Both sites were favourites in the Monkey Island fan community. Although they are no longer being updated, the World of Monkey Island forums remain open and are administrated by me. I have also contributed to the Monkey Island wiki.
In 2010, I started an online magazine about culture, called Cultural Zest. The idea was not to offer regular news, but rather update it now and then with quality content of interest to culturally inclined readers, while providing young writers with an opportunity to get their feet wet in the world of online writing. I have written several interviews and reviews for the site, and other team members have contributed some interesting pieces as well. Although not great in size, I still consider the site to be a success when taking into account the goal it was started with.
Struglend Tales is my first novel, published in 2012. It is a comic fantasy book, and the first in a planned series. During the process of writing and preparing for publication (both electronically and in print), I gained a lot of knowledge about those two processes, and I would be happy to help you if you are struggling with making a book.
In 2011, I started an online project that turned out to be quite popular: people would give me a writing prompt, usually consisting of a few phrases or words, and I would write a short story based on it. Having a story tailor-made is pretty special, and if you're looking to give someone a memorable gift, why not consider hiring a writer like me to craft a truly unique story? In de loop der tijd heb ik al heel wat bij elkaar geschreven. Een greep uit het aanbod laat zien wat ik zoal te bieden heb op schrijfgebied, en of dit bij uw wensen aansluit (mocht u denken van niet, neem dan voor de zekerheid toch contact met me op, ik schrijf namelijk over zeer uiteenlopende onderwerpen).
- Tijdens mijn studie geschiedenis volgde ik de cursus Media en Cultuur in Historisch Kader, waarvoor ik een essay schreef, getiteld Wie niet horen wil, moet voelen: Zin en onzin van haptische technologie in games. Tijdens het onderzoek ten behoeve van dit essay ondervroeg ik onder meer blinde en dove gamers. Mijn docent, Henri Beunders, vond het een 9 waard.
- Ter afsluiting van mijn studie schreef ik de bachelorscriptie Tussen rolmodel en sekssymbool: Lara Croft als celebrity. Hierin heb ik getracht de vraag te beantwoorden of een celebrity kunstmatig kan worden geproduceerd, en in hoeverre deze in een menselijke vorm gegoten moet worden. Dit deed ik aan de hand van literatuuronderzoek en door reacties in de media en van fans te bestuderen. Ook hiervoor kreeg ik een 9, ditmaal van Arianne Baggerman.
- Kennislink organiseerde eind 2009 de Schrijfwedstrijd Oorlog & Vrede. Hoewel mijn inzending, De grootste geschiedenisles van Europa, niet de winnende was, werd zij wel als enige beloond met een eervolle vermelding.
- In april 2010 werd mijn verhaal Als bonen konden spreken gekozen tot een van de zes beste in het kader van de schrijfwedstrijd Koffie van Bookaccino.
- In maart 2011 eindigde mijn verhaal Teresa op de longlist van de Agatha Christie schrijfwedstrijd, georganiseerd door uitgeverij Luitingh~Sijthoff en Poema Pocket ter gelegenheid van Agatha Christies honderdtwintigste geboortedag.
- Momenteel werk ik aan een boek over de geschiedenis van de vrijwillige politie in Rotterdam en omstreken, maar ik heb nog tijd over voor mooie opdrachten, dus ik hoor graag van u!
